Character Information
Name: Ren Amamiya
Canon: Persona 5
Canon Point: mid-January
Age: 17
History: History

Personality:

As with the other protagonists in the Persona series, Ren is a silent protagonist, leaving everything down to his name is the choice of the player. Being that there is anime name plus various other manga and spinoff games that reinforce its use, I'll be using the protagonist's provided name "Ren Amamiya" and taking into consideration some of the characterization displayed in said media as well as the game. Spoilers through the vanilla endgame for various plot points.

Though he's silent, there are notable traits about him that can be gleaned from the variety of tones in conversational responses and the reactions of the people around him. The writing establishes certain traits as an existent baseline, namely his strong sense of justice which gets him into trouble in the first place, trying to save a woman from being sexually assaulted and having the tables turned on him in return. The first main villain of the game, for example, is a high school volleyball coach and in his various encounters with Ren and his friends, you can respond to his hounding and taunts of expulsion with veiled threats, defiant silence, or sass cranked up to eleven. Ren's not lacking in confidence for anything - once his mind is set to it, he won't stop at anything to carry out his & the Phantom Thieves' justice. By the end of the game Ren is leading the Thieves to open rebellion against the cognition of society itself, society's supposed willingness to give up control over their own lives to a self-styled god that promises them the sweet release from having to make decisions for themselves. Ren ends up shooting god in the face.

Sarcasm and sass is the order of the day for most times, too, whether Ren is trying to get a rise out of someone or gently rib his friends. It does double duty in that, being someone that's been put into a claustrophobic situation in being put on probation and forcibly transplanted form the quiet countryside to the concrete jungle of Tokyo, his aloofness and sarcasm protects him from the whispering campaign from other students at school loudly worrying that he'd kill them if he so much as looked at them. At the same time, his friends are allowed to see his sense of humor for what it is when they're allowed close enough, taken into his confidence.

That being said the entire reason the Phantom Thieves are founded are for ostensible noble reasons - helping out the helpless. But as it's true of the others that they have a deeply personal stake in wanting to strike back at the corruption in society, it's also true of Ren, whose life veers wildly off course because he has the temerity to try to help a woman who is being harassed by a drunken man trying to force her into a car. For his trouble he's falsely accused of assault and put on probation with threat of juvenile detention. The quiet anger that Ren harbors from this is his driving motivator for his sense of justice, but doesn't exclude the broad, but patient vengeful streak puts Ren on the path where he needs to control that anger or risk everything on being exposed. It's a near thing a few times throughout the game, where he can openly taunt or threaten the Phantom Thieves targets in broad daylight, appealing to the darker side of his flashiness and showoff-y nature as Joker and driving right into recklessness. To the point, he risks his own life on a plan that has a high chance in bringing his own death just so the Phantom Thieves can escape high public pressure and take aim at their true, final target. His tendency to risk only himself is both brave and incredibly stupid, but he won't allow others to shoulder his responsibility.

His quiet nature is as much a social cover for his rebelliousness against authority as it is a microcosm of his role in the Phantom Thieves: the steady bedrock at the heart of the group, there to ground the disparate personalities of his friends and catalyze them toward a singular goal in taking down the corrupt at heart. To adults, Ren is quiet and serious, two of the Confidants (this game's Social Link system) sometimes remarking that Ren looks too serious, holding his cards close tot he chest. Yet with his friends he's much looser, often teasing them or, for example, in one of the final Confidant scenes with Yusuke Kitagawa he remarks that one day he hopes to paint Ren's smile, a sure sign that Ren lets his calm mask drop a bit more for his friends.

He's strong, reliable, capable of maintaining a rock solid calm in most situations and that's what his team's success thrives on.

Abilities & Skills:

Being a Wild Card user in the Persona series, Ren can wield multiple Personas - various magical fonts of power - where others can usually only use one. This makes him extremely flexible in combat situations, allowing him to react to any scenario with the appropriate offensive, defensive, or party-aiding abilities that are honestly too numerous to list without an Excel spreadsheet. But other than having a wide variety of magical powers at his disposal, Ren uses a knife in battle and proves to be extremely swift and acrobatic, using a combination of stealth and clever tactics to pursue the Phantom Thieves' goals within the Metaverse. The Personas solely unique to Ren as opposed to other Persona protagonists are his first Persona Arsène and his ultimate Persona Satanael.

His main strength is his adaptability, which extends to the mundane world as well. He often finds himself as the confidant to the people around him no matter their circumstance, and it's often the case that he's able to help them understand themselves better or help solve a deeply rooted problem in their lives. As for personal abilities, he's stupidly dexterous, able to make and use lockpicks on top of performing silly cocktail party tricks and twirling pencils while he studies.

Aside from his Personas Ren has a flair for acrobatics and dexterous motions, often performing flips and displaying proficiency with daggers and handguns. For what it's worth, he can also eat absurd amounts of food and never gain an ounce on that stick-like body.

Inventory/Companions:

- a cellphone
- glasses
- handful of lockpicks

Choice: Fae, second choice is Puca
Reason: Given his mischievous disposition and propensity toward pushing envelopes to see what he can get away with much like an ornery cat, I feel Ren is suited for Fae. He is known as a Trickster in his own canon, and being able to trick and glamour others would come as easily to him as sneakily casting blessings on small objects to protect those he cares about.

Sample: Sample one, two
